Leaves near Todaiji side memorial.

Gong inside the great Todaiji Temple on the left facing the huge Buddha statue.

By burning these incense sticks in front of the main facade of Todaiji Temple, visitors gain wisdom as they waft the smoke over their heads.

Simple, but beautiful, the inside of the Todaiji temple is adorned with numerous ornate candle holders full of these delicate white candles.

Todaiji in Nara Park, Nara, Japan, is the worlds largest wooden building and houses the world’s largest bronze Buddha statue called a daibutsu (大仏 = big Buddha). As always, it was crowded, but the scale of the structure was no less awesome.
Here are my photos of Todaiji during the To-kae Lantern Festival. The upper doors of the main facade are open so you can see the Buddha’s face from outside. This is rare and only happens twice a year.
Stands such as this are frequent around Nara Park. Here you can buy the rice wafers called senbei to feed to the deer.
The deer in Nara Park work hard for their food and are fed well.
This little guy was clearly a bit confused. Also, this shot was taken in sweltering 32C plus heat of August* so the water in the drainage ditch most likely was a relief from the hot walking paths.
*I know, I’ve a bit behind… but who doesn’t like a nice reminder of summer during the cold of winter eh?.
