These are “omikuji” that you can purchase at shrines. On each paper is a fortune, if the fortune is unfavorable, you can tie it up as seen here.

    when i first saw these, i thought they were like prayer flags… but obviously not…
    the mass of colour is amazing. and there looks to be hundreds of omikuji. i really like the focus of the second photo. it seems to show the scale really well :)
